The composition Untitled [2014] is a return to an earlier working methodology.
Release such Alterstill (1995) Fractuur (1997) and Construction 1-4 (1999) for eg, used sampling and manipulation of other peoples sound to build compositions.
A sort of "plunderphonics" without the politics or the concerns of being sued for copyright. [ my relative obscurity helped ].
All the sounds, which have been extensively reconfigured, edited etc in Untitled [2014[ , were given to me by Tom Mudd.
He explains the process used to generate the original sounds below:-
The four systems were devised to test the role that nonlinear dynamics play in interactions with digital software. Two of the systems used damped, forced duffing oscillators coupled to linear resonators at sample rate to create a slightly unstable musical instruments that can be seen as very crude physical models. The other two were attempts to create similar systems that did not incorporate nonlinear dynamics: one granulating a sample of similar audio material, and the other removing the nonlinearity and feedback element to become a simple oscillator coupled to a resonant filter bank.
All the systems are made in MaxMSP, with custom external objects.
